Your reporting dashboard at a glance

The dashboard is the reporting home page for your chatbots. It shows how much they are being used, how well conversations are going, and where they could serve users even better.

How it is built
---------------

The dashboard is made up of individual **widgets**. Most widgets show one metric, in usually one of two forms:

- **A single number**, such as total conversations, sometimes with a small sparkline showing the recent trend.
- **A chart over time**, showing how a measure has moved day by day.

You choose which widgets appear and how they are arranged. See [Customising your dashboard layout](/articles/customising-dashboard-layout).

The date range
--------------

The dashboard has a date range control, and every widget respects it. Changing the range updates the whole page at once.

![The date range control at the top of the dashboard, zoomed in as Last 30 days is selected, then the whole page updating to the new range](https://assist.knowledge.civ.io/storage/MRNGAF5W3GM97xCHKZtJIJjYSb3cqSFGYBskmOcW.gif)

This is worth remembering when a number looks wrong. A sudden drop in conversations is often just a shorter date range rather than a real fall in usage.

Where to start
--------------

If you are new to the dashboard, a small set of widgets tells you most of what you need:

- **Total conversations** and **Total messages**, for whether the chatbot is being used at all.
- **Total dislikes**, as the quickest signal that answers are missing the mark.
- **Total messages with errors**, so technical problems do not go unnoticed.
- **Average messages per conversation**, as a rough read on whether people get an answer quickly or keep rephrasing.

Add more as you get a feel for your own numbers. The full list is in [Reporting widget reference](/articles/reporting-widget-reference).

Numbers on their own rarely tell you what to fix. When a metric looks off, go and read the conversations behind it: see [Finding a conversation](/articles/finding-a-conversation).
